The mistreatment of women has become a global phenomenon that has gathered each country to unite in the 1995, Beijing Declaration. The Beijing Declaration is a declaration for each country to unite and fight for every women’s rights in this world and believe that women’s rights are a human rights.

This declaration has covered various problems experienced by all women in the world, but I just found out and recognizes that the issue of violence has a big scope in this declaration, it is even become a priority. It proves that men role in this world is so big and the nature of patriarchy in this world is tremendous.

In some countries, violence used as a material of controlling a woman’s sexual behaviour, as a cultural ideology and even a media to resolve conflicts. Patriarchal culture is exemplified in several proverbs in several countries such as India “the man whose wife dies is lucky. But not so the man whose cow dies”. Also, in my country, Indonesia, being a woman is the hardest things to do. Women are powerless, there are lots of things that we are unable to do. “Women should be tidy”, “Women must be able to cook”, “Women must be good at serving the will of men” and so on and so forth. Women in Indonesia are a face of oppression.

After I read the declaration, the commitments given were quite realistic and gave us, women, some hope. But, As per 2020 that should be the celebration of the 25th year of Beijing Declaration and Action by UN. Sadly, the efforts made by both the UN and the government do not portray what is written in the Declaration. This year should be a great moment to charge the promises of the inequality of women rights ad interim. Maybe, it is just an ink in a paper for the government.

In this COVID-19 pandemic, there’s a policy called Lockdown or Work from Home that sadly increasing the rate of Violence in every household. According to research from Komnas Perempuan (the National Commission for the Protection of Women) in Indonesia, out of 2,285 respondents, 80% of respondents said that violence in their homes tended to increase.

In my humble opinion, The Government should not be busy thinking about the nation economic progress right now. But, Prioritizing the welfare of each natural person especially women who lives in the house. The Government should made a policies that are enough to provide and create a sense of security in each woman’s believes. We should questioning that signing this agreement is a mission to saving women physically and mentally, or the countries are simply wanted to get closer to the foreign investors.
